Responsible Dog Ownership Month: Tips from a San Diego Veterinarian

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month and a great time to check in and make sure you are giving your furry friends the best possible love and care. This event was founded by the American Kennel Club, and its goal is to help ensure dog owners are providing the utmost care and support to their dogs.

Whether you are a veteran dog owner, or you have a new puppy at home, the San Diego veterinarians at SD Veterinary Hospital are here to support you on that journey. Below you will see a few tips we put together to assist you on your journey to becoming the most responsible dog owner!

Proper Grooming

Depending on your dog’s coat, the time in between grooming may differ. However, one thing all dogs have in common is that they all need a good wash every so often. Depending on the coat, dogs can experience matting or just be plain stinky. It is important to have your dog on a good grooming schedule.

Adequate Exercise

Your dog spends the majority of their life inside your home. If they had opposable thumbs, they would take themselves out for some exercise every day! Dogs are high-energy animals, and it is not only important for their physical health but their mental health, too. Daily walks, playing fetch, or even just taking them out to a field and running around are all great options when it comes to exercise.

Find a Primary San Diego Veterinarian

From puppyhood to adulthood, your dogs’ annual veterinary visits are vital to their health. Many San Diego veterinarians offer a “puppy package” for young pups as their trips to the vet are more frequent (vaccines, checkups, etc.) As your pup gets older, they will be on an annual schedule to ensure they are healthy. It is also very important to have a primary San Diego veterinarian for both common issues that can arise and emergency situations. If your dog is due for a checkup, call now to schedule an appointment.
